It would be hard to find a voice that captures the mood of a song more perfectly than this one. It’s the voice that soars with inspiration, soul and warmth. The voice of course belongs to Australian singer Daryl Braithwaite. In a distinguished career spanning more than 35 years Daryl Braithwaite is one of Australia’s award winning premier performers.
His initial success as a singer came with Sherbet, a band which will forever remain in the history books of Australian music. Between 1971 – 1979 Sherbet produced 20 national Top 40 singles and were the first Australian band to top the $1 million dollar mark in album sales in this country with a total of 15 albums and 30 singles to their credit with songs like “Summer Love” becoming the highest selling single of 1975 and “Howzat” not only a No #1 hit in Australia, but also achieved #2 in England.
Following the success of Sherbet, Daryl returned to the Australian Music Scene in a very big way as a solo performer in 1988 with the release of the phenomenally successful Album ‘Edge’ which spent well over a year in the national charts. ‘Edge’, spawned four hit singles with “As the days go by”, “All I do”, “Let me be” and the gold single “One summer”. The album itself topped the ARIA charts in 1989 and became the highest selling C.D in CBS Australia’s history. During this period Daryl toured extensively not only in Australia, but also Canada, The USA, The UK and Europe adding to the incredible sales figures for ‘Edge’.
Although hard to follow, Daryl’s second album, ‘Rise’, released in 1990 proved to be equally successful becoming the biggest selling album in 1991 attaining multi platinum status. ’Rise’ produced two further hit singles “Rise” and “The Horses” #1 in May 1991 and maintaining the no #1 position for three consecutive weeks before going on to achieve platinum status.
2020 saw Daryl still at the top of the charts with his #1 single ‘Love Songs’. “It was exciting for me to have been in the music industry for 50 years and to have a big radio hit, and all I could think of was... ‘Here we go again!’
It all started of course over 50 years ago when Russell Morris became the first Australian artist to score consecutive number one singles with his first two releases – ‘The Real Thing’, which is one of the classic psychedelic singles of all time, and ‘Part Three Into Paper Walls’. Both reached #1 on the Australian chart, and what followed has become one of the most remarkable stories in contemporary Australian music.
Fast forward to October 2012, when Russell Morris began a trilogy of albums, each with a theme of Australian stories. The first, Sharkmouth, is a collection of tracks about the Australia of the 1920s and 1930s. The album went on to reach #6 on the ARIA Chart, and is certified platinum.
Then came Van Diemen’s Land in 2014 which focused on significant events rather than the stories of individuals. From the prison ships that began Australia as a penal settlement, to the union strikes, the First and Second World Wars, Van Diemen’s Land covers a vast array of Australian history.
And in 2015 Russell released Red Dirt – Red Heart, with amazing musical stories with unique Australian themes which won the coveted Best Blues And Roots Album at the 2016 ARIA Awards.His most recent album, ‘Black and Blue Heart’, was produced by the legendary Nick DiDia (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam) alongside Bernard Fanning, and backed by a dream studio band (Declan Kelly on drums, Wolfmother’s Ian Peres on keyboards, Matt Englebrecht on bass, and Dan Kelly on guitar). With ‘Black and Blue Heart’ Russell continues to find unique ways to challenge himself creatively.And through it all, Russell remains one of the hardest working musicians in the country. Born in New York City, Irwin Thomas (Jack Jones) arrived in Australia as a ten year old. Even as a youngster, Irwin began showing an incredible talent with his guitar playing. At fourteen Irwin was already playing professionally. At the same time, he was earning a reputation as a very accomplished and well respected studio musician.
After heading back to the United States to further study his craft, Irwin eventually returned to Australia and joined the successful 90’s band ‘Southern Sons’ as lead singer/guitarist. Rai grew up in Sydney, Australia. His mother was a classical piano teacher, and his father was a language teacher who played bass and guitar in local rock bands. Influenced by his parents, Rai developed an appreciation for a wide variety of music, including classical, rock, pop and jazz.
After high school, Rai was awarded a scholarship to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he studied jazz piano. But before he could finish the program, Rai came to the attention of Columbia Records in the US, and signed his first record deal.
Before his first album was released, however, Columbia Records experienced a management shake-up, and Rai was released from his contract. He returned to Australia and started Thirsty Merc, a rock band which over the next ten years would release three successful albums (one platinum, one double-platinum in Australia).
After the third album with his band, Rai decided to take a break to focus on writing music that incorporated jazz and his other early influences. In 2012, Rai came to Los Angeles and started writing and performing extensively, landing opening slots on tours with Bernhoft and Oh Land. His music soon attracted the attention of the LA music community including tastemakers like Chris Douridas of KCRW.Rai released three EPs under the moniker “Sun Rai,” as well as an album of live- in-the-studio recordings. But to avoid confusion with the artist Sun Ra, Rai began using his given name.
